Performance

You have a busy schedule and likely want a vehicle that can handle a variety of performance situations. Although at first glance both of these models offer solid power, a closer look shows the 2023 Highlander provides more muscle and better efficiency with its 2.4L turbocharged 4-cylinder engine. It achieves 265-hp and 310 lb.-ft. of torque to offer a standard 5,000-lb. maximum towing capacity1. The 2023 Pilot’s 3.5L V6 engine achieves 285-hp and 262 lb.-ft. of torque but only has a standard 3,000-lb. maximum towing capacity2. You have to go with available AWD on the Pilot in order to access a 5,000-lb. maximum towing capacity2. Both drivetrain versions of the Highlander have better fuel economy at 22/29 MPG city/hwy3 for FWD and 21/28 MPG city3 for AWD, compared to the Pilot’s 19/27 MPG city/hwy4 and 19/25 MPG city/hwy4 for FWD and AWD respectively. 

Technology

When you want to find the best route to Blank Park Zoo or entertain everyone on board during a family road trip across the Midwest, modern technology makes these tasks, and more, easier. Looking inside the Highlander cabin quickly reveals that it has the edge in the category of connectivity features. The base trim of the 2023 Highlander comes equipped with a standard 8-inch touchscreen with wireless Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto ™ connectivity5.  In the Pilot you’ll only have a standard 7-inch touchscreen and wires are needed to connect your smartphone unless you have a higher trim level. Looking at the available infotainment screens, the Pilot still falls short with its 9-inch touchscreen option compared to the Highlander’s available  12.3-inch touchscreen. Both models do offer available Head-Up Display features, but the Highlander’s is dramatically larger at 10-inches compared to the 4-inch version in the Pilot.

Interior Space

In terms of passenger capacity and cargo space both of these vehicles match up very evenly, both coming standard with three rows of seating and the ability to seat up to eight passengers with the second row bench or up to seven with second-row captain’s chairs. For cargo versatility both have a 60/40 split-folding third row and flat-folding second-row bench seats. The Pilot does have slightly more cargo space6 in the trunk area at 18.6 cubic ft. compared to the Highlander’s 16 cubic feet of stow-away space7 but they both offer 48 cubic ft. of cargo space when the third row is folded flat. I had an appt at 2:00 pm. I was an hour early. It was seamless dropping off my vehicle it only took about an hour and a half to fix the problem. Ian was in contact with me the whole time letting me know what the problem was and what caused it,,, and it was helpful he let me know right up front how much it was going to cost. The 4 Runner is my first New Vehicle I have bought I love it and care a lot about keeping it in good shape.

I had an appointment for regular maintenance on my RAV4. The service techs were efficient and helpful. Terry (I think that's who it was) went over my oil change record/schedule with me. Also, the complimentary coffee while I waited was a huge plus.

If I could give Justin a worse score I would. I had at least two bad interactions where Justin had dismissed my concerns. But one time I confronted him after he dismissed my concerns again. Two weeks later coming back in for the concerns I had expressed he again proved that his customer service skills had not improved and AGAIN dismissed my concerns. If I decide to use Toyota of Des Moines in the future, I will purposely ask to not have Justin. Even after my 10/10 bad experience with Justin, Brock came in and really turned the experience around. He listened to my concerns and explained them to me. He went above and beyond what he needed to do. So thank you Brock.

Had my car towed to Toyota on a Monday. I had Tuesday off from work - waiting for a call all day. I finally called at 4:30 pm car still not looked at was told next appointment opening was next Monday!? So I have no car and I needed to get to work and expecting a grandbaby any day! Thursday I finally get a call with what needs to be done which was a lot for a 2004 car. Had Friday off so I was planning to figure things out the next day? No one told me it was drivable (which it was) so I'm thinking probably need to get a new car?? I had to work till 9 pm on Thursday (had to find a ride) and grandbaby on the way (had to find a ride to the hospital) spent all night at the hospital and all day Friday. Called Toyota to plead for a loaner so I could get to work and be mobile the answer was "no" if you are trying to sell cars that is not the way to do it! So I rented a car because I needed to get to work Saturday, Sunday, and Monday 300 dollars and I owe Toyota 500 for just looking at the car! I had Tuesday off so I called Monday to see what needed to be fixed to make it drivable so I could get it home or to another dealership! That's when they told me it was drivable!?!? Seriously!! That would of been nice to know 4 days ago!! Only help I got was a ride to Toyota to pay my bill! I told them, when paying my bill, that it would of been nice to know my car was drivable because I rented a car! No "I'm sorry" nothing!
