The road can be an unpredictable place, whether you are driving through downtown Des Moines or on the highway. That’s why Toyota is always working to create advanced safety features, such as the Automatic Emergency Braking System. Stop by Toyota of Des Moines to see how you can learn more about this feature at our dealership!
The Importance of Automatic Emergency Braking
In an effort to go above and beyond for the safety of their drivers, Toyota agreed back in 2016 to work with the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration (NHTSA) and have an Automatic Emergency Braking System on 95% of their vehicles by Fall of 2022. As of 2020 more than 10 million vehicles were produced by Toyota for North America with Automatic Emergency Braking. This is important not only for the peace of mind of shoppers, but also for the proven results – according to information from a recent Toyota press release, vehicles that were equipped with an Automatic Emergency Braking system were 40% less likely to be the cause of a front-end collision1.
How Does It Work?
How does Automatic Emergency Braking work? It uses camera and radar technology to sense either a vehicle or another obstacle in front of your Toyota. Not only does it sense the presence of a potential obstacle, but it also uses intelligent technology to judge when a collision might occur. Based on the current driving speed, whether or not the driver has applied the brakes, and the distance of the vehicle or obstacle in front, the system can apply the brakes to help stop the vehicle. The system will first send out a warning, usually a visual and/or an audible alert, and then if action is not taken, the automatic braking will be deployed.
Toyota Feature Options
Automatic Emergency Braking is included as part of Toyota Safety Sense™ for nearly all Toyota vehicles as of 2022. Specific feature names may vary based on year and model, but in most cases you’ll find it labeled as the Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection2. As the name implies, it is designed to help avoid collisions with other vehicles as well as pedestrians. A newer version also available for select vehicles adds cyclist detection to help detect the presence of someone riding a bicycle. The advancement of laser technology has helped make additions like this possible.

“ We had an unfortunate, totally accidental mechanical situation. Fortunately, Brock, Chad, Kelly, and Shane helped us resolve the situation with complete professionalism. Thank you!?? ”
“ Took my vehicle to be serviced 3 days prior to my appointment time because I was leaving town and needed service before my appointment time and they were able to fix it the next day allowing me to keep my schedule. Much appreciated thank you! ”
“ You were very quick. Stinks with Rav 4 and 10,500 miles logged & we can’t ever see how many of our total miles are pure electric. Every other car maker offers this on PHEV’s. Julie is really bummed the RAV4 doesn’t have the seat memory buttons for 2 people. Hates changing her seats & mirrors back after husband drive the RAV ”
“ Took my 2023 Tundra in for an oil change and tire rotation. I also asked about the recall on my truck. $143.00 for oil change and tire rotation. A good place down the street changed the oil in my Mazda for $57. No one at Toyota knew what to do about the recall. Really??? I believe the recall started in Nov of 2025. Anyhow, not a happy customer right now. I have had Toyotas from 1985 thru today. First time I have been disappointed. ”
The biggest issue was the shuttle.
“ The biggest issue was the shuttle. I was told my husband could get a ride to work right away because he's 1 mile away. When he got there, they said it would be a one hour wait ”
I don't typically leave negative reviews, which is why I
“ I don't typically leave negative reviews, which is why I felt it was important to share my experience. My initial visit did not leave a good impression. I had a scheduled service appointment, and although replacement parts needed to be ordered, no record of my visit was created. When I called a week later to check on the status, I was told there was no documentation of my appointment or the parts that had supposedly been ordered. This resulted in unnecessary delays before the repair was finally completed nearly a month later. Unfortunately, the issue did not end there. Less than two weeks after the repair, I had to return because the same problem persisted. I was told the technicians were unable to reproduce the issue, so no repairs were made, despite my providing a video clearly showing the problem occurring. I've been a customer of Stivers Ford for years and only began servicing my vehicle with Toyota after purchasing my Toyota in 2025. Based on my experience so far, I'm seriously considering returning to Stivers for future service because the level of communication and follow-through I've experienced here has been disappointing. The most frustrating part is that I purchased an extended warranty for added peace of mind, yet I don't feel I've received the level of service or support I expected. I understand that some issues can be difficult to diagnose, but accurate documentation, clear communication, and confidence that customer concerns are being taken seriously are all reasonable expectations. Unfortunately, that has not been my experience. ”
2 The Pre-Collision System (PCS) with Pedestrian Detection (PD) is designed to determine if impact is imminent and help reduce impact speed and damage in certain frontal collisions involving a vehicle, a pedestrian or a bicyclist. PCS w/PD is not a substitute for safe and attentive driving. System effectiveness depends on many factors, such as speed, size and position of pedestrian or bicyclist and weather, light and road conditions. See Owner's Manual for additional limitations and details.
