When to Get Toyota RAV4 Maintenance

Toyota RAV4 Maintenance ScheduleThe Toyota RAV4 maintenance schedule follows a 6-month/5,000-mile interval. This means you should be getting routine maintenance at least twice a year—with more frequent appointments if you drive more than 10,000 miles each year.

Make sure to follow whichever interval comes first. For instance, if your long commute has you driving 5,000 miles every couple months, you’ll want to get service at the end of every 5,000-mile interval.

On the other hand, if you walk to work and only use your RAV4 on the weekends, it might be closer to a year before you drive another 5,000 miles. In this case, make sure to get routine maintenance done every six months.

One last caveat before we jump into the RAV4 maintenance schedule: Certain operating conditions require you to get more frequent service. If most of your driving is done under these conditions, contact your service technician for more details. Special operating conditions include:

Driving through dusty areas or across dirt roads

  • Frequent towing or otherwise carrying a heavy load
  • Extensive idling and/or driving long distances at low speeds

Every 6 Months/5,000 Miles

Every maintenance visit should include a tire rotation. This helps your tires last longer and offers an opportunity to check tire pressure and tread depth. Your service technician should also inspect:

  •  - All fluid levels
  •  - Wiper blades
  •  - Brake linings/drums
  •  - Brake pads/discs

Every 12 Months/10,000 Miles

Your Toyota RAV4 uses synthetic motor oil. This means it can last up to one year or 10,000 miles before needing to be replaced.

Every 18 Months/15,000 Miles

If you have a four-wheel drive RAV4, your propeller shaft bolts may become loose over time. Get them re-torqued every 15,000 miles. Four-wheel drive models should also get their rear differential oil and transfer case oil inspected at this interval. All RAV4 models, meanwhile, should get a multi-point inspection including the following:

  •  - Ball joints and dust covers
  •  - Brake lines and hoses
  •  - Cabin air filter
  •  - Cooling system (coolant, radiator, and condenser)
  •  - Drive shaft boots
  •  - Exhaust pipes and mountings
  •  - Steering gear, linkage and boots

Every 36 Months/30,000 Miles

Oil Filter ChangeIf you haven’t already replaced the following, now’s a good time to do so:

  •  - Cabin air filter
  •  - Engine air filter
  •  - Transfer case oil (4WD)

While your RAV4 is in for these services, it should also get the following components inspected:

  •  - Automatic transmission fluid cooler hoses and connections
  •  - Other signs of leakage from automatic transmission
  •  - Fuel system lines, connections, gaskets, and vents
  •  - Brake lines and hoses

72 Months/60,000 Miles and Beyond

Don’t forget to keep repeating the above services at regular intervals. As your RAV4 begins getting more miles under its belt, there are a few additional services you should look out for.

  •  - At 72 months/60,000 miles, inspect the drive belts. Then, repeat this inspection every 18 months/15,000 miles afterward.
  •  - At 120 months/100,000 miles, replace the engine coolant.
  •  - At 144 months/120,000 miles, replace the spark plugs and inspect the vacuum pump for your brake booster.
